While some people experience a sudden onset of IBS symptoms after having gastroenteritis, others may have symptoms for a long time without any associated event. Your gene make-up, your lifestyle habits and your dietary patterns are contributing factors to develop IBS. Knowing the interplay between genetics factors, diet, gut microbiota and gut endocrine cells is essential to understand the physio-pathological mechanism that characterise IBS (Ref 1).
